WATER AND HYDRATION
The importance of water
The body functions optimally with the appropriate amount of water.
Why? Because a significant fraction of the human body is water. This body water is distributed in different compartments in the body. Lean muscle tissue contains about 75% water. Blood contains 83% water, body fat contains 25% water and bone has 22% water.
Throughout the body we have connective tissue (fascia). Between every single cell in our body there is connective tissue and it keeps things in their rightful place. If the connective tissue is fully hydrated, it is stretchable and slippery. It encases muscles, organs and structures and is present throughout the body.
If you’re not sure what connective tissue (fascia) is, think of a leg of lamb before roasting it. You will notice a thin, white, stretchy layer over the entire roast. This is connective tissue. It is the same with the slimy layer between the skin of a chicken drumstick and the meat on the inside. When connective tissue is wet, it is slippery. However, when it dries up, it behaves like “Glad Wrap”. Allow two sheets of dry Glad Wrap to touch and they cling to each other. However, if one of them is a little wet, they will not stick. Due to the water the two sheets slip and slide easily, without sticking.
With too little water, the fascia adheres (sticks) to surrounding tissue and movements become harder to make, require more effort, and can lead to physical problems. It therefore follows that keeping ourselves hydrated can maintain our bodies health.
The Bowen Technique works primarily on connective tissue (fascia). As a result, a hydrated body enables the connective tissue to move easily, and respond more effectively to the treatment it receives.
